Project ReNew provides reintegration programs for those returning to Denver from the Department of Corrections. We work to reduce community crime by rebuilding the lives of individuals who have previously made poor choices.
• Since 1986, Colorado’s prison population has grown from 4,000 inmates to 23,000 today.
• Between 50% and 80% (depending on statistical source) of released inmates return to prison when unable to function legally in our society.
• Faced with budget shortfalls, Colorado has reduced education, mental health, general health and social service programs for a growing and expensive prison population.
• The cost of Colorado’s prison population has grown from $29 million in 1980, to $442 million in 2002.
• The Denver metropolitan area experiences the return of 3,000 to 5,000 ex-offenders each year. West Denver neighborhoods receive many of these people with drug and alcohol problems and low education levels who are often alienated from their families.
Services are highly individualized and determined by an interview process. We offer case management, employment placement, housing, drug and alcohol classes and clothing. We also make referrals to other agencies when appropriate. |
