The Denver Inner City Parish provides education for Latino youth of low-income families through La Academia. While the success of La Academia is helping students to graduate from high school, there remains an ongoing need to provide college preparation and career counseling for these students’ future. To address this need, DICP has implemented a program for La Academia called Puentes (Bridges) to help with the next steps after graduation.
During the school year, Puentes coordinates services with other local nonprofits to provide technical training and job placement for La Academia students.
Puentes counselors help students create career paths with step-by-step progressions. Puentes counselors:
• plan in-state university and college campus visits.
• help students apply to their preferred post secondary options, help students apply for scholarships and financial aid, perform bi-weekly tracking of college students with the school and teachers
• monitor grades of college students and provide additional support to college students from La Academia.
Puentes also offers intensive ACT preparation for all juniors and seniors, including preparation materials and Accuplacer preparation (Accuplacer includes essay assessments,
